Know what you have before you renew
A renewal reminder tells you when to pay. It does not tell you whether your insurance still suits your family, property or business. A policy review gives you time to look at the cover, understand important limits and prepare questions before making a decision.
SMNICS helps customers in Ahmedabad and across Gujarat discuss existing insurance and compare their needs with the details in their policies. You may be reviewing one health policy, several family policies or a set of business covers. Start with the type of insurance, your renewal date and what has changed. We can then explain the next step and what information is needed.

When a review is useful
Consider a review before renewal, when your circumstances change, or when a policy term is unclear. Give yourself time to gather documents and ask the insurer questions. A review is also useful when a quotation appears cheaper but you cannot tell whether it offers the same protection.
- Family changes: a new dependant, a change in employment or a different household budget can change the questions you need to ask.
- Property changes: a move, renovation, new equipment or higher stock levels may mean your earlier information needs updating.
- Business changes: new activities, staff, premises, contracts or delivery routes can affect the cover you need to discuss.
- Renewal changes: compare the proposed terms with your current policy, including any change in benefits, limits or the part of a claim you must pay yourself.
Tell the insurer about changes that your policy requires you to report. Do not wait for a review appointment if a renewal, claim notification or other deadline is close.
What we look at with you
The starting point is the policy schedule, which records the details of your cover, together with the full policy wording and any later changes issued by the insurer. A brochure or payment receipt alone may leave out important conditions.
We help you identify the people, property or activities named in the policy; the cover period; the amount insured; and the main conditions to discuss. We also look for practical questions about exclusions, claim documents and renewal. An exclusion is something the policy does not cover. A deductible is an amount you may need to bear before the policy pays, as defined in its terms.
The aim is a clearer discussion about your existing protection. It is not a promise that every gap can be covered or that a future claim will be paid. Any change must be accepted and confirmed by the insurer under the relevant policy terms.
Questions for different kinds of cover
Health and family policies
Check who is insured, the available cover, hospital access and the conditions that affect a claim. Ask about room limits, co-payments, waiting periods and treatment-specific limits where they apply. A co-payment is a share of an eligible claim that you must pay. Compare these details alongside the premium rather than judging the policy only by its price.
Have your existing policy and renewal notice ready. Discuss any proposed change in cover before making a decision. If you are considering a different policy, ask how continuity, waiting periods and acceptance would be handled in your own case. See our health insurance page for the buying route.
Life and personal accident policies
Review the purpose of each policy, the insured person, cover amount, premium commitments and recorded nominee details. Ask what events trigger payment and what conditions apply. Life cover and personal accident cover serve different purposes; do not assume one automatically replaces the other.
If your income, dependants or financial commitments have changed, explain that during the review. Read more about term life insurance and personal accident insurance.
Motor, property and business policies
For vehicles, check the vehicle details, declared use, selected add-ons and renewal information. For property and business cover, prepare a current list of assets, stock, locations and activities. Explain new equipment, a change in premises or an expanded operation so the relevant questions can be raised.
Business owners may need to review several policies together. A property policy, employee benefit policy and cargo policy address different needs. Our fire insurance, group insurance and marine and shipping insurance pages explain those separate starting points. Explore our business insurance options for a broader view.
Prepare for your conversation
For your first enquiry, tell us the policy type, approximate renewal date, your city and the main question you want answered. Keep medical reports, identity documents, bank details and complete policy files out of the first message. Ask which documents are needed and how to share them before sending anything sensitive.
For the review itself, keep these items available:
- The current policy schedule and full wording.
- Any endorsements, which are written changes issued to the policy.
- The renewal notice or quotation you want to compare.
- A short list of changes in your family, assets or business.
- Your questions about cover, exclusions, cost or the claim process.
If something is missing, say so. We can explain which information would help the discussion. Confirm the scope of the review and any applicable charges before agreeing to work.

Common questions
Does a review mean I must buy another policy?
No. The purpose is to understand your existing cover and the questions that need attention. The discussion may concern your current policy, a renewal or options worth comparing. A purchase is a separate decision.
Can you guarantee that a claim will be accepted?
No. The insurer assesses a claim against the policy and the facts. A review can help you understand conditions and prepare questions, but it cannot guarantee a settlement.
What if I already have a claim problem?
Tell us that when you make contact so your enquiry follows the right route. A policy review does not replace reporting a claim to the insurer or meeting its deadlines. Keep the insurer's written messages available for the discussion.
